🌡️ Urban Heat & Heat Islands

Study of Urban Heat Islands (UHI), thermal properties of urban surfaces and development of CityVox software for quantifying and mitigating urban thermal effects.

IUSTI (AMU)IMBE (CNRS/AMU)

Urban Heat Islands

Lille is the 2nd most UHI-affected city in France (88% of population exposed). In Marseille, UHIs interact with the Mediterranean climate during heatwaves. RESILIENCE quantifies these effects and evaluates mitigation strategies.

CityVox

Software developed by IUSTI, based on 3D voxel approaches. It imports 3D maps, calculates surface temperatures from radiative energy balances and simulates heat flows at fine resolution.

  1. Measure albedo, emissivity and effusivity of various urban surfaces
  2. Develop and validate CityVox for quantitative UHI simulation
  3. Update GHG emission inventories
  4. Assess the impact of greening and surface materials
  5. Map urban thermal discomfort zones

Field measurements

Intensive measurement campaigns including: albedo and emissivity (IUSTI portable emissometer), surface temperatures (thermal camera), meteorological measurements at twin sites and the Saint-Jérôme campus (Marseille).

GHG balance and mitigation

Updating urban-scale CO₂ emission inventories to constrain UHI models and support effective climate mitigation decisions.
